What is Texas Hold’em?

The Basics

Texas Hold’em is a community card poker game where each player gets two private cards and shares five community cards to make the best five-card hand. Players bet in rounds: pre-flop, flop, turn, and river. The goal is to win chips by having the best hand or convincing others to fold. It’s a game of skill, strategy, and psychology.

Hand Rankings

Knowing hand rankings is essential. From high card to royal flush, we’ll guide you through the hierarchy.

  • Royal Flush — A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit
  • Straight Flush — Five consecutive cards of the same suit
  • Four of a Kind — Four cards of the same rank
  • Full House — Three of a kind plus a pair
  • Flush — Five cards of the same suit
  • Straight — Five consecutive cards of mixed suits
  • Three of a Kind — Three cards of the same rank
  • Two Pair — Two different pairs
  • One Pair — Two cards of the same rank
  • High Card — The highest card when no other hand is made

Betting Rounds

The game unfolds in four betting rounds, each adding community cards and strategic decisions.

  1. Pre-flop: after receiving hole cards.
  2. Flop: three community cards are dealt.
  3. Turn: fourth community card is dealt.
  4. River: fifth community card is dealt.
